Hand-Embroidered Southwestern Patterns

Around the lower half of the crown, a continuous band of hand embroidery carries the geometric vocabulary of the American Southwest. At the center, a large diamond motif — its outer border in deep black silk, an inner frame in cream, and a heart of rich terracotta crossed by a black stitch — anchors the composition. Flanking it, stepped zigzag thunderbird patterns in terracotta climb outward, their layered steps creating a sense of movement and rhythm. Rows of pine-tree triangles alternate between black and terracotta, three to a group, their sharp points evoking the mesas and evergreens of the high desert. Tiny turquoise diamond accents punctuate the pattern, their blue-green hue a quiet echo of the stone on the band below. Every stitch is laid by hand using silk embroidery thread, which catches the light with a subtle luster that gives the patterns depth and dimension.

Turquoise & Coral Beaded Leather Band

A dark brown full-grain leather band wraps the base of the crown, its upper and lower edges framed by precise rows of saddle stitching in warm tan thread. Strung along the band is a necklace of semi-precious beads — alternating rounds of turquoise and red coral, separated by tiny antique silver barrel spacers — creating a rhythmic color pattern that echoes the embroidery above. At the center, a large oval cabochon of spiderweb turquoise takes pride of place. Its surface is a network of brown veins running through a vivid blue-green ground, each stone unique in its matrix. The stone is set in a twisted silver rope bezel, its coiled wire frame catching the light and drawing the eye inward. On either side of the central stone, silver conchos stamped with sunburst or rosette patterns add another layer of Southwestern jewelry language, their radiating lines evoking the desert sun. At the band's end, a silver X-bar concho marks the closure, its crossed bars a classic motif of Western silversmithing.

Bone Wool Felt with Cattleman Crease

The crown and brim are crafted from a single batt of premium wool felt in a warm bone color — a pale, creamy beige that evokes the adobe walls of a Pueblo village at midday. The wool is selected for its density, resilience, and soft hand, then felted to a tight, durable finish that holds its shape through rain, wind, and long days in the sun. The felt has a subtle, slightly fuzzy nap that catches the light and gives the surface a soft, tactile quality. The crown is blocked into a classic cattleman crease — three distinct creases running front to back, the center crease highest, the side creases lower — creating a silhouette that is both timeless and instantly recognizable as Western. The wide brim is gently curved, its edges soft and pliable, allowing the wearer to shape it to their preference. The bone-colored felt provides the perfect neutral canvas for the bold embroidery and vibrant stones, making every detail pop against the pale ground.

SCENE I

The Thread & the Needle

Wooden spools of silk thread in terracotta, deep brown, turquoise, black, and bone, a scatter of embroidery needles, and a small swatch of woven geometric fabric — the materials of the artisan's bench laid beside the finished hat. The embroidered patterns on the crown echo the colors of the thread spools, each stitch a small act of translation from spool to felt, from pattern to object. This is where the Kachina is born, one careful stitch at a time.

SCENE II

The Stone & the Silver

A Navajo-style squash blossom necklace with a large oval turquoise pendant in a silver rope-and-dot frame, strung with turquoise stones and antique silver chain, beside a strand of rich red coral beads — all resting on the hat's pale brim. The turquoise stone on the hat band echoes the pendant's stone, the silver bezel echoes the necklace's silver, and the coral beads echo the band's coral. Two traditions of Southwestern jewelry, one on the neck and one on the head, speaking the same language of stone and silver.

SCENE III

The Weave & the Feather

A folded Navajo-style weaving in terracotta, black, bone, and turquoise geometric patterns, its fringed edge soft and worn, beside a single barred eagle feather — brown and cream bands, its barbs fine and delicate — resting on dark wood. The hat's embroidered patterns echo the rug's geometric language, its bone felt echoes the rug's cream fields, and the feather adds a quiet element of ceremony and nature. Three objects of the Southwest — woven, stitched, and grown — gathered together in warm, golden light.
